With last week's releases drawing tepid response, Indra Kumar's sex comedy has emerged stronger at the box office

It's been more than two weeks that Indra Kumar's Grand Masti hit the marquee but thanks to the new releases' insipid response, the sex comedy is on a roll even into its third week. Of all the four new releases Warning, Prague, Maaziii and Supermodel none of them were able to create any ripple in the box office, paving the way for Grand Masti to emerge stronger.

The film is expected to reach the Rs 100 crore mark soon (worldwide market) and has raked in Rs 90 crore (pan India). The Lunchbox and Phata Poster Nikla Hero had a decent standing respectively with their 10-day collections, standing at Rs 33.5crore and Rs 16.55 crore. Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, `None of the new releases has been able to make its mark at the box office this week, which helped Grand Masti make its position stronger. Now all eyes are set on Krrish 3.`

According to exhibitor Akshaye Rathi, Grand Masti has shattered all records previously held by adult films and has emerged as the highest grosser under this genre. Shahid Kapoor's Phata Poster however has not met with the expectations around the film. However, the film being a family entertainer will help its overall fate at the BO. The Lunchbox is a clear winner despite the lack of a star who can pull the masses into the theatres.

`Warning is a novel film that attempts to push the envelope when it comes to production values and technology but the lack of a star and a thumping promo have kept the film from taking off in a big way.` Distributor Sunny Khanna says, `Grand Masti will soon be joining the Rs 100 crore club.

The third weekend collections amounted to Rs 5.5 crore. Phata Poster Nikla Hero had a below average collection, considering its marketing budget and cost of production. The first 10-day collection of the film has amounted to Rs 33.5 crore. Khanna adds, `Warning was a disaster, collecting only Rs 2.65 crore. The movie failed to entice the audience into coming to the theatres.

Whoa! 'Grand Masti' has raked in Rs 90 crore

Actress Sonalee Kulkarni, seen in "Grand Masti", has hinted that the filmmakers are already planning a third movie to the franchise.

"The best compliment for a filmmaker is when the audience asks them about the next part. So yes, it's a compliment and I am sure our makers are listening to it. Definitely, the process for a third part must have begun," Sonalee said here at the Globoil India Awards Saturday.

Asked if she would be a part of the third film, Sonalee said: "I don't know! It would be too early to say it. The script has not started and they are still contemplating on it because the audience accepted the second part well. So it's still too early to talk about it."

Meanwhile, Sonalee has thanked the audience for making her debut film a superhit and says she couldn't have asked for more.

"Thank you so much everyone. The film couldn't have been a success without you all. Thanks to all the audiences and viewers who watched the film two to three times in theatres," Sonalee said.

"What else can I ask for... it's awesome, amazing," she added.

Directed by Indra Kumar, "Grand Masti" is a sequel to the 2004 film "Masti" and stars Ritesh Deshmukh, Aftab Shivdasani and Vivek Oberoi.

The end of the very talented Shahid Kapoor's streak of bad luck seems to have encountered an unexpected stumbling block.

The amazing success of Indra Kumar's Grand Masti puts a big question-mark on the expected turn-out for Raj Kumar Santoshi's Phata Poster Nikla Hero (PPNH). Would the eye-popping success of Grand Masti affect the Shahid's grand comeback plans?

Trade analyst Amod Mehra feels films are bound to be affected by the success of their counterparts released previously. `Whenever any film is declared a hit, the releases during the following week get affected. And if the new film's content is weak the successful film from the previous week overshadows the new film. `

While the week's other release Ritesh Batra's much-anticipated The Lunchbox has a totally different audience-profile PPNH is a comedy, albeit a far less off-colour comedy than Grand Masti, and therefore liable to be smothered by the storm of smut that the sex-comedy has released.

Says Bihar exhibitor Roshan Singh, `Grand Masti is doing roaring business. We don't expect a sizable fall in the audience attendance in the second week. Since Shahid's film is also a comedy its opening would be affected to a large extent. Grand Masti's comedy has the advantage of sex. `

PPNH director Raj Kumar Santoshi is unfazed by the competition that has crept up on his film from behind. `I've been around for 23 years as a director. I've seen too many trends and fads, ups and downs to be affected by anything. I am sure my film would do well regardless of the competition. `

Incidentally Santoshi's first directorial venture Ghayal was released on the same Friday in 1990 as the Grand Masti director Indra Kumar's Dil. Both were blockbusters.

Trade expert Komal Nahata doesn't think PPNH would be affected by the unexpectedly huge success of Grand Masti. `When there's scope for two releases during a week why can't PPNH and Grand Masti which are separated by a week do well when their release is separated by a week? PPNH can do well in the 1st week while side-by-side GM scores in its 2nd week.
